President Clinton heeft supporters van zijn Clinton Global Initiative opgeroepen hun steun te betuigen aan het Amerikaanse bid voor het WK voetbal in 2022.
Eerder meldde ik al dat de president, die tijdens de finale van het WK in Zuid-Afrika ons team van Spanje zag verliezen, zich actief inzette om het WK naar de VS te halen. Zo sprak hij voorafgaand aan de finale uitgebreid met FIFA-voorzitter Sepp Blatter.
De VS deden aanvankelijk een gooi naar het WK van 2018 en 2022, maar vanwege de verwachtingen dat het WK in 2018 aan een Europees land toegewezen wordt besloten de organisatoren zich enkel op 2022 te richten.
Via een e-mail vroeg president Clinton zijn supporters nu om het Amerikaanse Bid, genaamd Go USA, in de laatste fase te steunen met een contributie. Omdat ik zijn Global Initiative steun kreeg ik ook een e-mail. Hier een deel uit zijn mail:

Toch blijven er voor Nederland genoeg concurrenten over voor het WK van 2018. Zo strijden naast het Holland Belgium Bid ook Rusland, Engeland en Spanje/Portugal om het grootste sporttoernooi ter wereld.

Merkwaardig. Clinton geldt, in tegenstelling tot zijn opvolger, als een van de meest onsportieve presidenten van de V.S. Wel staat hij erom bekend dat hij graag in de spotlights staat. Be a good sport, Bill, en bemoei je niet met soccer.
